Getting Started

Measuring Impact

The NCN is an "Infrastructure and Research Network" where we strive to enable others to utilize modeling and simulation in the advancement of nanoscience and nanotechnology. We engage in research in the areas of (nano) electronics, mechanics, bio, photonics, and materials primarily through leveraged funding and deploy our research tools on nanoHUB.

alt The traditional metric to assess impact on research is the number of publications in the scientific literature. We have identified over 1000 citations to nanoHUB, associate each citation with the cited tool, map them to social networks, and track the secondary citations that cite these nanoHUB citations. Tools can be rank-listed by number of citations to assess the impact of a particular tool on research.

Powerful Graphical User Interfaces blur the distinction between research and education. We find that tools originally conceived for education are getting cited in the literature (e.g. FETtoy and MolCtoy citations). Tools that originally were relegated to expert research use are integrated into dedicated use in Education as demonstrated in the Berkeley Toolkit.

Collaborate, a resource for nanoscience and nanotechnology, is supported by the National Science Foundation and other funding agencies.
