What does lattice vector means in the S4 simulation set up?

While setting up the simulation in S4 solver, under the “layers“tab there is a field where the co ordinates for the lattice vector are to be filled. What does it means ?

    The lattice vectors represent the edges of a unit cell of a lattice. The basis vector coordinates set the periodicity based on these lattice vectors (ux,uy) and (vx,vy).

      If I am working with the binary grating, does the lattice vector represent the pitch of the sample?
