MATDAT18: Materials and Data Science Hackathon

Category: conference/workshop

MATDAT18 is an NSF-funded “hackathon” in which teams, each composed of both materials (“mat”) researchers and data (“dat”) scientists, will work together to apply advanced data science methods to address important, challenging problems in materials science and engineering. The goal of this hackathon is to spark new collaborations in which important, challenging problems in materials science are addressed in novel ways by leading methods in data science. It is expected that as a result of this workshop, the most successful teams will pursue additional funding and resources to build upon their successful collaboration.

The application deadline for material scientists is January 19, 2018. To apply, complete the materials scientist application form and email it to Brian Reich at A crucial part of this application is to propose a research problem that is both scientifically important and amenable to a data science solution. After the committee has reviewed the applications, the accepted projects will be posted on the Projects page.

The application deadline for data scientists is March 16, 2018. The application window will open in February, 2018. As part of the application, data scientists will provide a general description of their background and skill set, and also identify one of the workshop projects where their skills will make a valuable contribution.
