About the Group
This page, along with the quiz discussed, were created for my leadership, policy, and change class project. It defines a collection of leader identities based on leadership styles discussed in Leadership: Understanding the Dynamics of Power and Influence in Organizations by Vecchio (2007) and some literature about change. (This content is not specific to the nanotechnology community. The target audience are individuals that want to better understand themselves as leaders and want to reflect on their own leadership style.)
The tabs on the left list a variety of leader identities; click on each tab for a description of each identity. The leader identities discussed are: managers, transactional leaders, cooperative leaders, transformational leaders, servant leaders, visionary leaders, group think leaders, and destructive narcissist leaders. These leaders are a summation of some of the various types of leaders discussed in Vecchio (2007), but it does not encompass all types of leaders and all leadership styles. One type of leadership that is not discussed in these types is situational leadership, which discusses the importance of the relationship or task orientation.
Some of the major positive skills presented by the leaders discussed are direction-setting (having clear, effective goals), collaborative teaming, empathy towards others’ needs and values, living for the of others over oneself, envisioning the future, encouraging and accepting constructive feedback, being a good role model (lead by example), having successful role models/mentors, and causing beneficial change. These skills can be seen as targets for one to be a more successful leader.
You can find out what leader you are by taking this short quiz: https://purdue.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0cESL3qJ3U4btU9. Understanding your leader identity and the type of leader you want to be are the first steps to progressing who you are as a leader.
For people wanting a more in-depth evaluation of themselves and their leadership styles, there are professional tests that one can pay for. Dose of Leadership discusses the Top 5 Leadership Personality Tests at: http://www.doseofleadership.com/top-5-leadership-personality-tests/.
