Negative Refraction, Light Pressure and Attraction, Equation E=mc2 and Wave-particle Dualism

The process of transfer of radiation from the emitter to the receiver is considered. It is shown that the mass transferred by radiation is not always associated with portable energy by Einstein’s relation E = mc ^ 2. A more general relation has the form E = mVphVgr and includes the dependence on the phase and group velocities of the radiation. This relation implies that in case of a negative refractive index, when the phase and group velocities in opposite directions, the mass is transferred from the receiver to the source, but not vice versa, as usual. It is shown, that Abragam-Minkowski controversy may be resolved on the base of wave- corpuscular duality.


Victor Georgievich Veselago Victor Georgievich Veselago graduated from Moscow University in 1952, and was with P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute, Moscow, from 1952 to 1983. From 1983 up to now, he has been the head of the laboratory of magnetic materials in A.M. Prokhorov Institute of General Physics. He received his PhD degree in 1959, for radiospectropy investigation of molecular spectra, and degree Doctor of Science (solid-state physics) in 1974 for investigation of solid-state in high magnetic field., both from the P.N. Lebedev Institute. From 1980 to present, he is a professor of Applied Physics in the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. The area of scientific interest for V.G. Veselago is magnetism, solid-state physics and electrodynamics. In his papers, published from 1966-1972, it was at first considered electrodynamics of material with negative value of refraction index (so called Left-Handed Materials, LHM) V.G. Veselago is a winner of State Prize for science of USSR in 1976, and a winner of academician V.A. Fock prize in 2004. He is also an honored Scientist of the Russian Federation in 2002. He was awarded the EK Mees medal of OSA in 2009. He is a member of Russsian Magnetic Society, SPIE, AAAS, and a fellow of OSA. He is active as an expert in the Russian Foundation for Fundamental research, Russian Foundation for Humanitarian research, and is a vice-chairman of the Physics section of Supreme Attestation Committee of Russia (VAK). He is a founder and vice-editor of the electronic scientific journal “Investigated in Russia” and a member of advisory boards of Metamaterials and Optics Communications journal. Victor is married and has 3 daughters and a son. His favorite animal is lady-cat Fifa. His hobbies include railways, (real, not models).
