Abstract

This is the first lecture from the Fall 2008 Structural Engineering Seminar Series (CEE 595). The presenter is Assistant Professor Paramita Mondal. In this lecture, she discusses her work in the testing of concrete on the nano-scale. The overall goal of this work is to quantify the relationships between processing and performance of a material with its microstructural properties. Her research includes testing the local nano-scale elastic modulus of concrete in the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ). The research also deals with the effects of different additives on properties at the nano- to macro-scale.

Bio

Assistant Professor Paramita Mondal earned her bachelor of science degree in civil engineering at Jadavpur University in India (2001); her master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Connecticut (2004); and her Ph.D. in civil engineering from Northwestern University (2008). Her professional experience includes working as a design engineer for M.N. Dastur, a civil engineering firm in India.

Arif Masud holds B.S. in Civil Engineering (University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, 1986), M.S. in Structural Engineering (Stanford University, 1987) and Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics (Stanford University, 1993). In 1986 he was awarded the Mian-Iqbal Hussain Gold Medal by the University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan. Prior to joining the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he served on the faculty of University of Illinois at Chicago from 1994-2006, where he held joint appointment in the Department of Civil & Materials Engineering, and the Department of Bioengineering.
