Description

In nanotechnology, a particle is defined as a small object that behaves as a whole unit in terms of its transport and properties. It is further classified according to size: in terms of diameter, fine particles cover a range between 100 and 2500nanometers, while ultrafine particles, on the other hand, are sized between 1 and 100 nanometers. Similar to ultrafine particles, nanoparticles are sized between 1 and 100 nanometers.

  5. How to Engineer Human Microbiomes?

    01 Mar 2017 | | Contributor(s):: Mohit Verma

    We are developing tools based on nanotechnology, bioengineering, and analytical chemistry to understand causal relationships between microbiomes and their hosts, and to manipulate microbiomes for desirable outcomes, e.g. to shift patients from unhealthy to healthy states. One of these tools uses...

  6. Nanoparticle Pollutants

    13 Jan 2017 | | Contributor(s):: Darren Hayes, Nancy Healy, NNCI Nano

    Many plastics are in our oceans due to pollution, including ocean dumping and land runoff. Sunlight and alkaline ocean water break these plastics down into small particles, many are nanoscale in size. These nanoparticles can easily enter our cells. Students examine if and how  these...

  7. Synthesis and Characterization of CdSe Qunatum Dots

    09 Jan 2017 | | Contributor(s):: Nicholas Blake, NNCI Nano

    In this laboratory, students will study how surfactant-based chemistry can be used to synthesize CdSe quantum dots and study how the size of the quantum dots can be controlled by varying reaction time. The laboratory will  demonstrate how the color of these quantum dots can be connected to...

  8. Silver Nanoparticle Synthesis, Spectroscopy, and Bacterial Growth

    09 Jan 2017 | | Contributor(s):: Pennsylvania State University, NNCI Nano

    Students will learn about the differences in physical propoerties at the nanoscale as compared to the same materials at the macroscale. The students will demonstrate the appropriate use of a spectrophotometer and will convert between different units of measurement. This unit assists students in...
