Yes, for example as resonator for lasers if transparent or as elctronic quantum device (interferometer,..),if conductive.

I imagine they could serve as temperature isolators in solid interfaces, as due to its morphology, vibrations would get scattered by themselves, neutralizing the wave propagation.
