Good day, I am trying to find out what degree would prepare me the most to get into nanotechnology, specifically nano armor. Thank you.

Good day,

I am interested in finding out what type of undergraduate degree would best suit me in my pursuit. One day I would like to be able to help with designing and constructing new nano armor potentially for the military. Thank you for your time.

Hi Stephen, It could be many fields. I’m not knowledgeable in that specific area but I can give you some general pointers. Materials engineering is what first comes to mind, which is generally a subfield of Civil engineering. Your interests could also lead you into something like anthropometry or biomechatronics. It really just depends on where your interests are. It is likely that futuristic armor would be active (involving some control/feedback with the wearer) rather than passive (like a conventional bulletproof vest). This gets in the whole area of haptics, controls, etc. I would advise that doing your best in an undergraduate degree in any kind of related engineering or hard science will open doors to let you pursue advanced research. Also see, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powered_exoskeleton Researchers working on those projects may be able to better guide you. Good luck! Jim
