Dr. Jonathan Sun Seminar – Birck Nanotechnology Events
Monday, November 16, 2015 @ 09:15 am EST — Monday, November 16, 2015 @ 10:15 am EST
EE Room 317

Dr. Sun is a Research Staff Member in the Physical Sciences Department at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. He received a B.S. degree in physics from FudanUniversity, Shanghai, China, in 1984, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in applied physics from Stanford University in 1986 and 1989, respectively. For the following two years, he worked at Superconductor Technologies Inc. in Santa Barbara, California, as a member of the technical staff. He subsequently joined IBM at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center where he has been exploring advanced superconducting and magnetic materials and devices. Dr. Sun is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and a senior member of the IEEE.

There has recently been quite some interest in spintronic devices and materials for information technologies to move beyond scaling limit. Using spin-torque based random access memory (STT-RAM) device physics and technology development as examples, I will show the significant progress our community has made over the years, and some challenges that remain, both scientific and technological, which lead to clear needs for better functional materials systems discovery and novel device and systems concept development.
