How do I get my GIF, JPEG, or PNG picture into a tool.xml?

Rappture excepts base64 encoded image files. Files like gif's, jpg's and png's can be base64 encoded by using the a program called mimencode. Check the man page for proper usage.

It is suggested to convert jpeg and png files to gif before mimencodeing them this can be done using the convert command.

First generate the base64 encoded version of the image file.

convert myImage.png myImage.gif
mimencode myImage.gif > myImage.mime

After generating the base64 encoded version of the image file's byte stream, place the encoded data in an 'image.current' tag or a structure node, in the xml file. The xml below shows an example of placing the mime encoded image into an image tag, along with an integer:
