Installing Rappture on Mac OS X Systems

Note: You need to have X11 installed on your Mac before running Rappture.

1. Download the latest Rappture binary distribution for your platform: PPC -- (0MB) or Intel rappture-Darwin-i386-20120712.tar.gz (56MB)

2. Create a directory where you want rappture installed (for example "/usr/local/rappture"):

mkdir /usr/local/rappture

You can put the rappture distribution where ever you want.

3 Unpack the binary distribution.

tar -C /usr/local/rappture xvzf rappture-Darwin-PowerMacintosh-*.tar.gz

This will create directories "bin", "include", "lib", etc. under "/usr/local/rappture".

4. Edit the start up script.

vi /usr/local/rappture/bin/rappture.env

In the editor change the value of RAPPTURE_INSTALL_DIR at the top of the script:

 #!/bin/sh
  #
  # If you install Rappture elsewhere, edit the line below:
  RAPPTURE_INSTALL_DIR=/Users/rappture/...
                       ^^^^

Set it to the location of the installed rappture distribution (e.g. /usr/local/rappture).

5. Test it out. Put the Rappture bin directory on your command path:

for csh/tcsh:  set path = ( /usr/local/rappture/bin $path )"
for sh/bash:   export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH

(NOTE: You should put the PATH setting in your .profile file (sh/bash) or your .cshrc file (csh/tcsh) so it happens automatically whenever you start a shell.)

Now, run one of the examples:

cd /usr/local/rappture/examples/app-fermi/tcl
rappture

This should bring up a simple Fermi function simulator, built with Rappture and Tcl!

Try another example:

cd ../../graph
rappture

This should bring up a simple graphing calculator, built with Rappture and Python!
