S4 Tutorial

Abstract
This three part tutorial is for the S4 tool (Stanford Stratified Structure Solver) on nanoHUB and is designed for the nanoHUB IGNITE challenge. In the tutorial, we give an overview of the S4 electromagnetic simulation tool, and demonstrate the basic features through three examples.
In the first example, we explain how a plane wave should be reflected at an interface between two dielectric media, using air and glass to provide specific predictions and intuition.
In the second example, we explain how a multilayer photonic crystal can reflect light within the photonic stop band via destructive interference from reflections from adjacent layers. We also show the comparison between the graphical interface and control file, and explain the reduced unit system in S4.
In the third example, we show how to define a layer with periodic patterns in the lateral plane for a 1D grating structure.
Last, we point out references and examples for more advanced features of S4.
