Craig Svensson Dr. Craig Svensson is Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences, as well as Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, at Purdue University. He also serves as Chief Scientific Officer for McClure Park and as a member of the Board of Directors for BioCrossroadsLINX, an organization devoted to advancing Indiana’s strengths in drug development and manufacturing for both the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he pursued his pre-pharmacy and undergraduate training at the University of Maryland. He received his Pharm.D. degree from the University of Maryland in 1981 and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1984. After a postdoctoral fellowship in pharmacokinetics at the University at Buffalo, he joined the faculty of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, as an Assistant Professor, where he rose to the rank of Professor and Associate Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In August of 2003, he became the Lyle & Sharon Bighley Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Head of the Division of Pharmaceutics in the College of Pharmacy, The University of Iowa. He assumed the position of Dean at Purdue University on October 1, 2006.

Dr. Svensson’s research has centered on the mechanism of idiosyncratic drug reactions. His laboratory has focused on the genetic, environmental, and immunological factors that predispose patients to adverse drug reactions that affect the skin and liver. His laboratory was the first to demonstrate the ability of human skin cells to metabolize drugs, resulting in protein haptenation and activation of stress signals.

Dr. Svensson has served as a member or chair of numerous grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health. He is a regular reviewer for numerous scientific journals, including the Journal of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics and JAMA - the Journal of the American Medical Association. He is currently the Associate Editor for the AAPS Journal and is a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.
