Abstract

A Joint Indo-US Workshop on "Scalable Nanomaterials for Enhanced Energy Transport, Conversion and Efficiency"was organized from August 19 to 21, 2008 at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) and the John F. Welch Technology Centre campus of General Electric in Bangalore, India. The primary sponsors of this workshop were the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum and the main participating organizations—JNCASR, Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN USA), and GE Global Research.

The workshop brought together leaders from Indian and US institutions to highlight the most promising approaches in harnessing the power of nanotechnology in energy-related research. Real progress at the convergence of energy and nanotechnology requires solutions to many fundamental challenges, many of which are related to the scalability, integrability, and energy transport properties of nanomaterials. As with virtually all challenges related to materials and their integration into useful devices, these problems require contributions from a wide range of traditional disciplines in engineering and the physical sciences.

The workshop attendees included 8 faculty and 9 student members from Purdue, 8 participants from other US universities, 20 out-station participants from India, 15 participants from 7 different companies, with a total of about 125 participants.
The workshop was structured to have brief oral and poster presentations in the beginning to establish understanding of techniques and materials that participating researchers are working with. This was followed by a special session designed through formation of four panels for discussion on topics themed in the earlier sessions of oral presentations (a) to identify challenge problems, (b) to determine promising paths of exploration, (c) for planning collaborative education and training activities in energy related issues, and (d) to identify specific opportunities for collaborative research that would combine complementary skills of researchers in basic sciences and engineering. The third day of the conference was hosted at the GE campus in Bangalore to facilitate interaction between academia and industry. The appendices of this report include the participant roster and the workshop’s formal agenda.
