In some other online courses (MOOCs) students can vote up discussion topics that are relevant to them, so that they "bubble up to the top" and are more easily found by other students.  This can be especially helpful in large courses where there may be a lot of posts to wade though, and helps students to see whether the question they were going to ask has been posted already.
