Verification of the Validity of the MOSFET Tool
Teaching Materials | 10 Oct 2010 | Contributor(s): Saumitra Raj Mehrotra, Dragica Vasileska, Gerhard Klimeck
Output characteristics of a bulk MOSFET are computed using MOSFET lab and compared with an analytical model based on Bulk-Charge theory. Parasitic resistance is used as a fitting parameter in the analytical model. MATLAB script used for verification is also available for download.
Exercise: Crystal Lattices
Teaching Materials | 29 Jul 2008 | Contributor(s): Dragica Vasileska, Gerhard Klimeck
This exercise helps the student better understand various types of crystal lattices, in particular diamond and zinc-blende and also helps in better understanding of the miller indicies. The results to some of these problems can be easily arrived at by using the crystal viewer...
Harmonic Oscillator: an Exercise
Exercise: Density of States Function Calculation
Teaching Materials | 06 Jul 2008 | Contributor(s): Dragica Vasileska, Gerhard Klimeck
These exercises teach the students how to derive the DOS function for a 2D and a 1D system and to calculate the energy-dependent effective mass for non-parabolic bands.www.eas.asu.edu/~vasileskNSF

BJT - Simulation Exercise
Teaching Materials | 03 Aug 2008 | Contributor(s): Dragica Vasileska, Gerhard Klimeck
This simulation exercise teaches the students the operation of BJT transistor, what is current gain and how one extracts current gain from the Gummel plot. It also provides output device characteristics from which students have to extract the Early voltage. Furthermore, it makes the students...

Band Structure Calculation: General Considerations
Teaching Materials | 17 May 2010 | Contributor(s): Dragica Vasileska
This set of slides explains to the users the concept of valence vs. core electrons, the implications of the adiabatic approximation on the separation of the total Hamiltonian of the system and the mean-field approximation used in ab initio bandstructure approaches. It then gives systematic...
PN Junction Lab Exercise: Non-Idealities in a PN Diode
Teaching Materials | 23 Jun 2009 | Contributor(s): Dragica Vasileska, Gerhard Klimeck
This exercise explores the behavior of a non-ideal diode in which the generation-recombination mechanisms in the depletion region, high levels of injection, and series resistance effects can significantly affect the diode behavior.
From 1 well to 2 wells to 5 wells to periodic potentials: an Exercise
This exercise demonstrates that the interaction between the wells lifts the degeneracy of the quasi-bound states and if in the limit we have infinite periodic potential it leads to formation of energy bands. Notice that when the interaction is less strong the energy levels are more sharp and...
