About PINE

PINE: Purdue Institute for New Era Electronics

Co-directors

Supriyo Datta and Mark Lundstrom

Purdue University

The mission of PINE is to:

  1. Create an intellectual umbrella for faculty involved in problem-driven research that couple scientific depth with application breadth
  2. Provide a unique educational experience for graduate students that will develop their scientific breadth and depth while also developing the communication and leadership skills that will help them stand out as exemplars of a new era of electronics.

PINE will “live close to the frontiers of science” and will “grow by the development of smart products.”

The specific goals of PINE are:

1) Facilitate new era research that integrate basic physics and materials science with functioning circuits and systems, thereby coupling scientific depth with application breadth, as described for example in DARPA’s Electronics Resurgence Initiative.

2) Learning Create high quality online learning resources to meet the staggering need for breadth in the new era. These resources will serve students, both on-campus and on-line. Selected materials will be disseminated freely through our signature web portal, and a low-cost Lecture Notes Series on New Era Electronics initiative will be launched.

3) Engagement Encourage entrepreneurship and intellectual property generation through interactions with our Master’s Program, that focuses on hardware innovation.

4) Establish links to industry, nonprofits and foundations.

5) Foster an intellectual atmosphere and global thought leadership through distinguished lecture series, discussion forums, annual retreats, summer schools, field-defining workshops and a signature website built on the nanoHUB.
