Professor Paul Asimow is an Earth scientist with broad interests in the origins of igneous rocks and the behavior of molten rocks in the deep interiors of planets. His research spans experimental, computational, and field-based studies of the behavior of natural materials at high temperature and high pressure, including the very short high pressure events known as shocks that result from fast collisions between objects in the solar system or the laboratory. His interest in impact craters began with studies of the enigmatic outflows observed by the Magellan spacecraft around craters on the surface of Venus. More recently he has conducted a number of controlled impact recovery experiments in the laboratory, seeking to reproduce the distinctive shock textures and high-pressure minerals found in meteorites and in the rocks beneath impact craters.
