Abstract

We describe the growth, processing, and characteristics of self‐assembled and
patterned quantum dot and nanopore lasers that exhibit interesting effects arising from reduction of the active medium to the quantum regime (<50 nm) in all three dimensions.

Bio

Prof. James J. Coleman received B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana. After working at Bell Laboratories and Rockwell International, he returned to Illinois and joined the faculty of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He currently holds the Intel Alumni Endowed Chair in Electrical and Computer Engineering and is also professor of Materials Science and Engineering. Dr. Coleman's research has centered on the development of III-V semiconductor lasers and photonic devices grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). He and his students are involved in the study of quantum dots, quantum well heterostructures, and low threshold and high power single mode index guided lasers and arrays.
Professor Coleman has published more than 400 papers in technical journals and 13 book chapters. He has 7 US patents and has given more than 80 invited presentations. He has served as Associate Editor of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters and as Guest Editor for five special issues of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics and the IEEE Journal of Special Topics in Quantum Electronics. He has served as the vice-president for publications and is currently president-elect of the IEEE Photonics Society (formerly the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society – LEOS). Professor Coleman has won the IEEE David Sarnoff Award, the IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Service Award, the OSA Nick Holonyak, Jr. Award, the ISCS Heinrich Welker Award, the IEEE Photonics Society William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award, and was an IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, the Optical Society of America, the American Physical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
