About the Group
Public Description
This group is dedicated to facilitate collaborative research and education outreach on hypersonic materials and structures. Developing leading-edge materials and structures that are capable of surviving high temperatures have been identified by the National Hypersonic Foundational Research Plan (NHFRP) as the critical technologies and major drivers for future hypersonic flight. This group is therefore established to seek and exchange research ideas on 1) revolutionizing the design of hypersonic vehicles by creating a new class of hybrid, hierarchical materials that achieve substantial breakthroughs in oxidation resistance, maximum useable temperature, and maximum supportable heat flux; 2) basic science needed to guide materials design, and engineering science needed to enable designers to use the new materials with efficiency and confidence; 3) basic science that spans novel routes for combining different materials in tailored morphologies, new experimental methods that enable the direct visualization of the mechanisms that control a material performance, and multi-scale probabilistic model formulations that can simulate mechanisms at all length scales with high fidelity; and 4) new engineering science for net shape processing and the combination of experiments and multi-scale models into a virtual test system that will transform the way in which materials are designed and qualified.
