Abstract

This simulation tool is an upgraded version of our THERMO tool (https://nanohub.org/tools/thermo) developed for thermoelectric module power generation simulations. Unlike THERMO tool, ADVTE tool allows user to upload their own temperature-dependent material properties, i.e. Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity as functions of temperature for the thermoelectric materials used in the module, and perform realistic module simulations for waste heat recovery and energy harvesting applications. Use of temperature-dependent material properties is particularly important for accurate module simulation when the temperature difference applied across the module is so large that the material properties are no longer constant over the temperature range. Cooling mode is not supported in ADVTE.

The boundary condition used in this tool is temperatures at the heat source and the cold side. The electrically insulating plates or heat sinks are placed at the hot and cold sides, interfacing between the TE legs and heat source/cold side. The module structure simulated is a typical Π-structure of TE module with both n-type and p-type TE elements.
