Abstract

Students will examine multiple ethical considerations related to peer-reviewed and other types of scientific writing and publishing. Specifically, students will discuss general aspects of scientific ethics, particularly as it applies to writing and publishing in the scientific literature. They will also examine various types of scientific misconduct with respect to the integrity and reliability of scientific data. Finally, case studies of both appropriate and inappropriate authorship on works describing experimental projects will be considered, evaluated and discussed. Students will be encouraged to relate personal experiences whereby they witnessed ethically questionable behaviors related to the scientific process. Alternatively, students will read and discuss case studies related to documented ethical transgressions, both planned and implemented.
